Financial independence is simple to understand.  Basically it means that you do not need to work to survive.This means that you have enough cash flow coming in from other sources (hopefully passively) that you do not have to go to work in order to support yourself and your family anymore.

Now that you understand a little it about what financial freedom is, how do you obtain it?  Well you have to get some alternative income coming in from places outside of your work.

One thing that you can do is to build a legitamate online business. The biggest advantage that an online business has over an offline business is that it can be set on autopiolet and will probably not even need any employees to run it.  If you create a website that is making you money then there may not be a lot of maintenance.If there is something that you need to do to keep it going you can always hire somebody else to take care of it for you.

Another thing that you can do is to start real estate investing. This is where you buy a house and rent it out.You profit based on what the rent it and what your bills are, ideally you want to be making positive cash flow, where you take in more then you have to spend, rather then the other way around.

One last thing that you can do is to write a book and get it published.  If you publish a book then you will actually get money coming in each and every time people buy the book.  One book could bring you in extra money for the rest of your life.

There are actually a lot more opportunities out there in this big world of ours then you think.You simply need to be a little creative with it and you have to put in the time and energy into starting it up and getting everything off the ground.  Once everything is set, however, they can lead to a lot of passive income which can lead to financial freedom and no more stress with money.
